Tumeric- the super spice


Bright yellow in colour, tumeric has been used in Indian and Chinese cultures as a powerful medicine. Used as an anti inflammatory agent as well as for the treatment of a number of conditions which include flatulance, menstrual pain, jaundice, toothache, bruises, colic and chest pain. This wonder spice is also associated with assisting in the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, protecting against Alzheimer's disease, relieving rheumatoid arthritis, helping cystic fibrosis sufferers and improving liver function, lowering cholesterol, to name just a few. It is even suggested that tumeric teamed with cauliflower may halt prostrate cancer.

Simple recipe using tumeric

Cauliflower braised with tumeric

INGREDIENTS

2 cups fresh cauliflower florets

1 small onion sliced

1 large clove garlic slivered

4 tablespoons olive oil

1/2 tsp each of cumin seeds and black mustartd seeds

1/2 tsp tumeric powder

salt to taste

METHOD

1. Heat olive oil in medium heat.

2. Add onions and garlic and braise until golden brown.

3 Add cumin, mustard seeds and tumeric and allow to fry in oil mix for approx 30 seconds.

4. Add cauliflower florets and salt to taste, and allow to cook until florets are tender.

5. Enjoy with steamed rice and fresh salad on the side.
